The Main Web Site

There are two main pieces to the web site as it is now (2005).

  • The static content is generated by scripts in a language I arrived at ("designed" is too dignified) specifically for the purpose of maintaining this site. It runs on MS Access 97. More about this later...
  • The dynamic content, i.e. the shopping cart and the search engine, is all written in Perl using .dbm files for data storage. It is long overdue for a massive overhaul, but it's pretty reliable even so. More about this, also, later.
  • ...three. There are now three parts, if you count this wiki.

The Future

  • I'm thinking seriously about setting up OTRS, a web-based trouble-ticket system. "Why would we need a trouble-ticket system?" was my immediate first thought. "We don't do tech support." Ah yes, but we do have issues that come up, and we do have an email program that tends to let customer emails slide off the top of the screen if too many other messages come in. And then I started to think of all the other ways it could be useful. And then I hear it took less than a day to get set up... So. I'm seriously thinking about it.
