To see how this hides the email address from spambots, first view the html source and then try copying/pasting the address. It would be relatively simple to modify a spambot to work around this technique, but if that happens it is also quite easy to modify this technique to make it more difficult, and hopefully it just won't be worthwhile for the spammers.
