It is simply impossible to say anything about the scenes of devastation now arriving from New Orleans and the Gulf Coast. We do have a spare bedroom we could offer as temporary lodging for one or two refugees, but as we're about 850 miles from New Orleans (and have 3 kids as well, which magnifies the importance of screening possible boarders), I don't know that there's anything we can do directly other than donate to the relief effort (which we have done).
Indirectly, what I can do is collect information on the government's response to Hurricane Katrina, lest there be any confusion about what kind of job they are doing. The information is posted on a wiki (Issuepedia, one of several wiki projects I run), so feel free to contribute.
And, as with 9/11, customer orders here have stopped abruptly; back then, it took about week for the next order to come in, and I don't expect recovery this time to be any quicker (especially with the likely ripple effects of the gas prices/shortage). Just know that we are still open for business and that if a week or two without any incoming orders is the worst that happens, we will count ourselves lucky.

2005-09-07 Update: the dry spell would seem to be over; orders and inquiries have resumed. Now, if anyone knows where we can get a hybrid or solar-powered car for cheap... ;-)
